Roy Thomson Hall - The Heart of the Toronto International Film Festival

Kicking Off TIFF 2014

Roy Thompson Hall

The Facts: Roy Thomson Hall, the home of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra ,opened in 1982.   Originally, the name of the structure was to be the "New Massey Hall".   After the Thomson family donated $4.5 million dollars to complete the construction of the hall, the building was renamed Roy Thomson Hall.    In addition to the symphonies that are performed there Roy Thomson Hall is also used for a lecture series with Famous Celebrities and famously ysed by TIFF for many of the premieres of their top films during the Festival. The red carpet has seen many famous stars, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Ben Afleck, Madonna, Colin Firth (Pamela's Favourite) and Julia Roberts, just to name a few.

Crightonism: It was a pleasure to create this image because I was able to draw three eras of architecture: The "Old"~ St. Andrew's Church, the "New"~Roy Thomson Hall and the "Futuristic"~ C.N. Tower. Personally, I've attended significant events in all three :)

Did you know?:  That the pond was originally designed to be a skating rink in the winter months?
Pam's Memories: I have worked in downtown Toronto for the last 15 years.  I heard during my exercise class one Friday afternoon during TIFF a couple of years ago that Colin Firth would be premiering his new movie "The King's Speech" that night at Roy Thomson Hall.  As my work day drew to a close I thought - what the heck - why not walk over there to see if I could get a glimpse of my favourite actor.  Well not only did I see Colin Firth and his lovely wife I actually was able to buy a ticket from a scalper for $5,00 more than it would have cost me online.  I went into the theatre and was treated to another 10 minutes of a somewhat shy and anxious Colin Firth on stage.  The poor guy had to suffer through the whole audience singing Happy Birthday to him as it was his 50th birthday!
