El Mocambo Tavern, Toronto by David Crighton

      $125.00

The Facts: The El Mocambo was opened as a music venue in 1850. The building was first used as a haven for escaped slaves. The name and famous El Mocambo palm tree sign were constructed in 1946. It was one of the first establishments in Toronto to obtain a liquor licence. Musical acts appeared on separate stages located on the main and second floor of the building.

The News: Recently, the iconic El Mocambo was for sale and it seemed as though another famous landmark establishment on the Toronto scene was gong to vanish until the last minute bid by Canadian entrepreneur Michael Werkele not only rescued the El Mo but promised to restore it to the glory days of past years!

Crightonism: About the second time I saw a musical performance at the "Elmo" it was a good one- March 1977 the band was the Rolling Stones. I won two tickets on CHUM FM Radio. I did this drawing shortly thereafter and returned to the club many times bringing a print to give to the performer with their name added to the marquee.

Built between late-1911 and early-1912, it is a designated 'heritage' site and is Toronto's oldest standing movie theatre in use for showing movies. It operated continuously as a movie theatre from its opening until June, 2006, making it the oldest continuously running movie theatre in Ontario. When news of its closure became public, a grass-roots community movement sprang up in order to save the cinema. After a great deal of effort, the movement was ultimately successful and the Revue reopened in October 2007. It is now operated by the not-for-profit Revue Film Society.

      About David

Beginning at an early age, David Crighton's fascination with art and architecture developed into a career which combines them both. Since graduating from Central Technical School in 1974 David Crighton has been recording the architectural diversity of Toronto & Southern Ontario with his distinctive style.

Consequently you can explore the extensive and ever expanding catalogue of images on this website. Pen and ink drawings with the addition of bright acrylic paint are the basic ingredients of David's art-making techniques. In addition to that, he utilizes computer software to enhance the final version of each print in ways too subtle to be done even by his well practiced hand. Many more Canadian and International subjects are in various stages of completion at David's busy Toronto studio. City TV #2 Speakers Corner, Toronto by David Crighton

      $125.00

If you're over 45 and lived in Toronto, you'll remember "Baby Blue Movies" and "CITY TV" the brain child of Moses Znaimer. Famous landmark and historic buildings are David Crighton's stock in trade. åÊHe has created an archive of beautifully detailed illustrations capturing all the phases of CITY TV - Toronto.

The landmark and historic building illustrated here is at 299 Queen St. W. is where CITY TV moved from it's first location on Queen St. E between Church and Jarvis.åÊ

The western facade of the station with the first Speakers Corner.

Crightonism: I can provide custom lettering in the sign on the right available for the name of your favorite City Show or V.J.

      Testimonial:Ìâ

"I used to work at CityTV, back in the day, and one of my colleagues, a cameraman ..., was talking about these prints -- how they used to give them out for 10 years service.Ìâ I didn't make 10 years -- was only there for 8, and now with Moses gone and a couple of corporate takeovers the place is very different. So I was moved to try to buy that print. And then on the site of course I fell in love with my mis-spent youth on the Kingsway, and the late lamented Sam's (the Record Man) sign.
so that's the story. I imagine you've heard many like it.
      Denis McGrath, Cameraman"

In the years before its sale to CTV , the building housed live music clubs known as The Concert Hall , and earlier, in the late 1960s, The Rockpile , a sitting-on-the-floor style concert venue which featured not only showcases for top local talent, but appearances by major international recording stars, including Toronto's first Led Zeppelin  concert on February 2, 1969.

Crightonism: I was there to see The Who perform the early show so Keith Moon didn't destroy his drum kit as he needed it for the second show… what a rip-off I thought at the time. Still, an exciting afternoon :)

Pam's Memories:Â I saw Iron Butterfly complete with a mandela and The English Beat at the "Rockpile". Â Later I took my kids to a couple of tapings of Mike Bullards show there.

Black Bull Tavern, Toronto Art Print by Artist Illustrator David Crighton Art

      $150.00

The Black Bull Tavern, Toronto is a cross between a university and biker bar with plenty of Molson to go around. Located pretty much in the heart of Queen West AND they have a summer patio !!! The Black Bull is an Everyman joint where regulars hunch over their brews, sometimes mumbling not so quietly to themselves. The decor is determinedly dour, with brown banquettes and nondescript tables lurking below the usual beer paraphernalia.

Crightonism: I've been to the Bull a few times in my Queen West days on a night out and I've "rested" for an hour or so on the patio during a cross-town bike ride bicycle that is :) Day or Night the Black Bull is an interesting place, you never know when the next entertainer will walk through the door !

The Goof Garden Gate, Toronto by David Crighton

      $125.00

Located in "The Beach" area of eastern Toronto this restaurant has been a favorite hang-out for thousands of kids many of whom attended Malvern Collegiate. At one point the neon sign lost power to two letters and the result read "GOO-FOO" which got shortened again verbally to "GOOF". The Fox Cinema across Queen Street East was and is still an attraction. Dinner at the Goof and a movie at the Fox equals a good night out in the Beach.

Crightonism: I've done the Goof-Fox night-out a few times myself and always enjoyed seeing my artwork on the menu too. It's been a while so I'm not sure it's still on the cover... I hope so :)

W/S El Mocambo Tavern, Toronto by David Crighton

      $87.50
