The square opened in 1965, and, as with the City Hall, the square was designed by architect Viljo Revell. Designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell (with Heikki Castr Bengt Lundsten, Seppo Valjus) and landscape architect Richard Strong, and engineered by Hannskarl Bandel, the building opened in 1965. It was built to replace Old City Hall, which was built in 1899.[3] The current City Hall, located at Nathan Phillips Square, is actually Toronto's fourth city hall and was built in order to replace the former city hall due to a shortage of space. The area of Toronto City Hall and the civic square was formerly the location of Toronto's Old Chinatown, which was expropriated and bulldozed during the mid-1950s in preparation for a new civic building.[4]

OLD CITY HALL:Toronto's Old City Hall was home to its city council from 1899 to 1966 and remains one of the city's most prominent structures. Toronto's Old City Hall was one of the largest buildings in Toronto and the largest civic building in North America upon completion in 1899. It was the burgeoning city's third city hall. It housed Toronto's municipal government and courts for York County and Toronto, taking over from the Adelaide Street Court House. York County offices were also located in Old City Hall from 1900 to 1953. With the establishment of Metropolitan Toronto, the county seat moved to Newmarket, Ontario (and to the Old Newmarket Town Hall and Courthouse).

    About David

Beginning at an early age, David Crighton's fascination with art and architecture developed into a career which combines them both. Since graduating from Central Technical School in 1974 David Crighton has been recording the architectural diversity of Toronto & Southern Ontario with his distinctive style.

Consequently you can explore the extensive and ever expanding catalogue of images on this website. Pen and ink drawings with the addition of bright acrylic paint are the basic ingredients of David's art-making techniques. In addition to that, he utilizes computer software to enhance the final version of each print in ways too subtle to be done even by his well practiced hand. Many more Canadian and International subjects are in various stages of completion at David's busy Toronto studio. Inaddition to art-making David is an accomplished and entertaining musician who performs cover songs from the 1960's to contemporary composers. Every day is a combination of his two favorite arts for which he is truly grateful.
