"I used to work at CityTV, back in the day, and one of my colleagues, a cameraman ..., was talking about these prints -- how they used to give them out for 10 years service.Ìâ I didn't make 10 years -- was only there for 8, and now with Moses gone and a couple of corporate takeovers the place is very different. So I was moved to try to buy that print. And then on the site of course I fell in love with my mis-spent youth on the Kingsway, and the late lamented Sam's (the Record Man) sign.

This North York institution closed it's doors on October 8, 2014 after 64 years in business. The Mount Pleasant area is still distinctly British, with its brick row houses and leafy streets. ]It has åÊlost a bit of its history that day indeed. Cheers Penrose !

Crightonism: I was only in the shop once... the day I took reference photos for my neighbourhood artwork/print based on Mount Pleasant Road. I certainly wasn't a "Starving Artist" when I walked out :)

"I walked over for a final feast of halibut and chipsåÊWednesdayafternoon but could see from a distance there were no people lined up outside and realized I was too late ... taped to the glass door was a thank-you note to customers in which they apologized for being closed prematurely, explaining that they were simply unequipped to handle their final month volume of business and were sold out ... several others Penrose devotees arrived while I was reading the note, one of them with a bottle of champagne for the ownersåÊ
I asked where he would be going for fish and chips, now ... he named the Olde Yorke, on Laird ... that's where I'll be going, too "

The artwork represented on this website are digitally printed by the artist in his studio on acid-free paper using archival quality inks.
Signed and dated in pencil by the artist.

    About David

Beginning at an early age, David Crighton's fascination with art and architecture developed into a career which combines them both. Since graduating from Central Technical School in 1974 David Crighton has been recording the architectural diversity of Toronto & Southern Ontario with his distinctive style.

Consequently you can explore the extensive and ever expanding catalogue of images on this website. Pen and ink drawings with the addition of bright acrylic paint are the basic ingredients of David's art-making techniques. In addition to that, he utilizes computer software to enhance the final version of each print in ways too subtle to be done even by his well practiced hand. Many more Canadian and International subjects are in various stages of completion at David's busy Toronto studio. Inaccomplished and entertaining musician who performs cover songs from the 1960's to contemporary composers. Every day is a combination of his two favorite arts for which he is truly grateful.
