Independent movie theatres are vanishing just like bookstores. The local theatre in The Beaches is The Fox. This drawing is part of my Festival Suite - a collage of independent theatres in Toronto, some of which are no longer open for business.

Crightonism: The fox is the most cosy little movie house in the Beach. A great area for dinner and a movie indeed :)

Poster - Beaches #2, Toronto, by David Crighton

    $45.00

Canadian Illustrator and Artist, David Crighton, is widely known for his collages of popular Toronto neighbourhoods. Continuing to update versions of the Beaches piece, David will add new landmarks and popular attractions as the neighbourhood changes. He can personalize and customize your neighbourhood by adding in your favourite stores or the places your family patronizes or that make your neighbourhood unique to you!

This artwork depicts various popular storefronts situated along Queen Street East in the Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Crightonism: These "Neighbourhood" images are actually collages of the highlights of the various communities. In each illustration the most interesting shops are all in the vicinity but not necessarily located next door to each other in reality. I seem to have a knack for making things fit together in a pleasing manner. Bloor West Village #1 was the first of it's kind in this series.

    $15.00 $10.00

Located in "The Beach" area of eastern Toronto this restaurant has been a favorite hang-out for thousands of kids many of whom attended Malvern Collegiate. At one point the neon sign lost power to two letters and the result read "GOO-FOO" which got shortened again verbally to "GOOF". The Fox Cinema across Queen Street East was and is still an attraction. Dinner at the Goof and a movie at the Fox equals a good night out in the Beach.

Crightonism: I've done the Goof-Fox night-out a few times myself and always enjoyed seeing my artwork on the menu too. It's been a while so I'm not sure it's still on the cover... I hope so :)

POSTER El Mocambo Tavern, Toronto by David Crighton Art

    $12.00 $10.00

The Facts: The El Mocambo was opened as a music venue in 1850. The building was first used as a haven for escaped slaves. The name and famous El Mocambo palm tree sign were constructed in 1946. It was one of the first establishments in Toronto to obtain a liquor licence. Musical acts appeared on separate stages located on the main and second floor of the building.

The News: Recently, the iconic El Mocambo was for sale and it seemed as though another famous landmark establishment on the Toronto scene was gong to vanish until the last minute bid by Canadian entrepreneur Michael Werkele not only rescued the El Mo but promised to restore it to the glory days of past years!

Crightonism: About the second time I saw a musical performance at the "Elmo" it was a good one- March 1977 the band was the Rolling Stones. I won two tickets on CHUM FM Radio. I did this drawing shortly thereafter and returned to the club many times bringing a print to give to the performer with their name added to the marquee.

POSTER Flatiron #2, Toronto by David Crighton

    $15.00 $10.00

THE FACTS: The̴Ì_Gooderham Building is an historic landmark of Toronto, Ontario, Canada located at 49 Wellington Street East. On the eastern edge of the city's Financial District (east of Yonge Street), it is in the St. Lawrenceneighbourhood wedged between Front Street and Wellington Street, where they join up to form a triangular intersection. Completed in 1892, it was an early example of a prominent flatiron building.

The Gooderham Building is the focal point of one of Toronto's most iconic vistas: looking west down Front Street towards the building's prominent rounded corner, framed on the sides by the heritage commercial blocks along Front Street, and with the skyscrapers of the Financial District towering in the background. The CN Tower is also visible from certain angles behind Brookfield Place. This vista frequently appears in imagery of the city.

Crightonism: The Gooderham Building also known as "The Flatiron" is without a doubt my favourite Toronto subject. Over my career I have created more artistic versions of this iconic landmark and it's developing surroundings than I can recall. Regardless of the activity around it, this unique piece of architecture dating from 1910 stands resolute on it's triangle of ground. The image you see here is the version that I think captures the essence of "My Toronto" - The Old, The New and The Futuristic !

    About David

Beginning at an early age, David Crighton's fascination with art and architecture developed into a career which combines them both. Since graduating from Central Technical School in 1974 David Crighton has been recording the architectural diversity of Toronto & Southern Ontario with his distinctive style.

Consequently you can explore the extensive and ever expanding catalogue of images on this website. Pen and ink drawings with the addition of bright acrylic paint are the basic ingredients of David's art-making techniques. In addition to that, he utilizes computer software to enhance the final version of each print in ways too subtle to be done even by his well practiced hand. Many more Canadian and International subjects are in various stages of completion at David's busy Toronto studio. In addition to art-making David is an accomplished and entertaining musician who performs cover songs from the 1960's to contemporary composers. Every day is a combination of his twoÌÎÌ_ÌÎ? favorite arts for which he is truly grateful.

David can personalize your housewarming, birthday, anniversary, wedding, Christmas gift or souvenir or your visit to Toronto upon request.

POSTER Old and New City Hall #1 Toronto by David Crighton

    $10.00 $7.50

Blending the old and the new, David Crightons' artwork brings together two icongraphic buildings.

NEW CITY HALL:̴Ì_The Toronto City Hall or New City Hall is the home of the municipal government of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and one of the city's most distinctive landmarks. Designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell (with Heikki Castr Bengt Lundsten, Seppo Valjus) and landscape architect Richard Strong, and engineered by Hannskarl Bandel, the building opened in 1965. It was built to replace Old City Hall, which was built in 1899.[3] The current City Hall, located at Nathan Phillips Square, is actually Toronto's fourth city hall and was built in order to replace the former city hall due to a shortage of space. The area of Toronto City Hall and the civic square was formerly the location of Toronto's Old Chinatown, which was expropriated and bulldozed during the mid-1950s in preparation for a new civic building.[4]

OLD CITY HALL:Toronto's Old City Hall was home to its city council from 1899 to 1966 and remains one of the city's most prominent structures. The building is located at the corner of Queen and Bay Streets, across Bay Street fromNathan Phillips Square and the new City Hall in the centre of downtown Toronto. The heritage landmark has a distinctive clock tower which heads the length of Bay Street from Front Street to Queen Street as a̴Ì_terminating vista.

Toronto's Old City Hall was one of the largest buildings in Toronto and the largest civic building in North America upon completion in 1899. It was the burgeoning city's third city hall. It housed Toronto's municipal government and courts for York County and Toronto, taking over from the Adelaide Street Court House. York County offices were also located in Old City Hall from 1900 to 1953. With the establishment of Metropolitan Toronto, the county seat moved to Newmarket, Ontario (and to the Old Newmarket Town Hall and Courthouse).

POSTER St. James Anglican Cathedral, Toronto by David Crighton Art

Cathedral Church of St. James in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is the home of the oldest congregation in the city. The parish was established in 1797. The Cathedral, with construction beginning in 1850 and opening for services on 19 June 1853, was one of the largest buildings in the city at the time. It was designed by Frederick William Cumberland and is a prime example of Gothic Revival architecture.
The church is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act and is the episcopal seat of the Anglican Church of Canada's Diocese of Toronto.

Crightonism: My father, Ross Crighton was an Anglican minister and as such this Cathedral was "Head Office" in Ontario where he was ordained and performed his religious mission. He would be very happy to see this artwork and probably expect a free print :)... I'd love to be able to put one in his hand but he'd gone to his reward. God Bless you Dad.
