This North York institution closed it's doors on October 8, 2014 after 64 years in business. The Mount Pleasant area is still distinctly British, with its brick row houses and leafy streets. ]It has åÊlost a bit of its history that day indeed. Cheers Penrose !

Crightonism: I was only in the shop once... the day I took reference photos for my neighbourhood artwork/print based on Mount Pleasant Road. I certainly wasn't a "Starving Artist" when I walked out :)

"I walked over for a final feast of halibut and chipsåÊWednesdayafternoon but could see from a distance there were no people lined up outside and realized I was too late ... taped to the glass door was a thank-you note to customers in which they apologized for being closed prematurely, explaining that they were simply unequipped to handle their final month volume of business and were sold out ... several others Penrose devotees arrived while I was reading the note, one of them with a bottle of champagne for the ownersåÊ
I asked where he would be going for fish and chips, now ... he named the Olde Yorke, on Laird ... that's where I'll be going, too "
